This bike is always present on our motorcycle tours and is the most wanted rental motorbike we have. Our story starts when fthmotors. purchased the very first touring bike, a white BMW F 650 F. Shortly after, it proved to be the right choice and we bought 2 black ones, unfortunately after a terrifying accident in Turkey, we lost the two black F bikes, as these were totaled. Under the pressure of the demand for the newer version F 650 GS we purchased 3 bikes of this model and tried to totally switch to small GS bikes. This proved to be a colossal mistake. The newer 650 GS it’s a good looking fashion bike, with lots of electronics on it, is full of hidden faults and its electronics are his biggest enemy. It is a lot harder to service it on the road, plastics everywhere, no wind or rain protection (the lack of front fender causes the water poring in your face), after a longer stretch of highway and revs a bit higher than normal it starts to run chaotic like it wants to stop, and it will. I’d say is way too expensive for what it is and any other single Japanese will do its job better, so is no need to put the BMW badge on it. So we ended up running after the customers with spare parts, or backup bikes on the trailer and carrying back the always faulty 650 GS. Interesting that the older BMW F 650 model, on its ugly name Funduro is running on every tour, and is hired all season long, goes thousands of kilometers away from our base and comes back all the time with a happy biker in his back. Its simplicity is making him an absolute winner and our most rented motorbike. Though is a carburetted single, can cope with any other motorbike we have, uses his power with joy if you work with the gear shifter, very easy to handle, beats everybody on the winding roads, carries the luggage, capable at highway speeds (all day long if you need to), good wind and rain protection, comfortable seat, amazing suspensions, handles poor surfaces and even mud very good. To be honest, their weakness is the voltage rectifier under the seat, but once you move this outside and change it to a stronger one your problems are solved. Be careful with the head set bearing as the grease is often melting out because of the hot frame (the bike is holding engine oil in its frame), and handling becomes tricky. We have lowering kit for these bikes, this way even the small Japanese ladies were able to ride the bikes. In one word, it is a faithful type of bike.
